Pikabuu: Smile is a psychological horror experience that explores the deeply unsettling nature of forced happiness. Set in a suburban neighborhood frozen in an eternal sunset, this chapter of the Pikabuu series introduces you to a town where everyone wears the same expression—wide, cheerful, and entirely unnatural. The player assumes the role of a mail carrier who must deliver increasingly bizarre packages to houses that don’t appear on any map. And with each delivery, the smiles become wider… and harder to ignore.

Smile for the Camera

The central mechanic of Pikabuu: Smile revolves around eye contact. Every person, mannequin, and even photograph in the game watches you—never blinking, never changing expression. Looking away too long causes visual distortion and breathing sounds to intensify. But staring too long may make them… move. Navigating the neighborhood becomes a delicate balance between being seen and pretending not to see.

  • All residents react differently if you return their gaze for over five seconds.
  • Cameras are everywhere, and they learn your patterns, causing jumpscares to trigger uniquely for each player.
  • Delivery packages sometimes open themselves, revealing memory fragments or items from your real past.

The Smile is Contagious

As you progress, you’ll notice changes to your character’s reflection, posture, and even the shape of their mouth. The game doesn’t feature a standard HUD; instead, your mental state is reflected in environmental details—photos of your family that gradually wear smiles they never had, journal entries signed with someone else’s name, and children’s drawings that change after each mission.

  • Whistling and laughter become cues for puzzle solutions, but also act as triggers for hostile entities.
  • Some homes are completely empty yet still have doorbells that laugh when rung.
  • The mail van begins to take you to locations you didn’t choose—like a school with no windows, or a movie theater that only plays footage of you.

Can You Forget to Smile?

Pikabuu: Smile offers multiple endings, depending on how deeply you embrace—or resist—the town’s twisted happiness. If you refuse to smile in mirrors, burn the letters before delivery, or hide from the public cameras, you may trigger the “Silent Ending,” where the world fades into grayscale and the smiles vanish. But if you embrace the system, even helping enforce the smile mandate, you’ll see what lies behind the real curtain—the thing that taught them to smile in the first place.

  • The “Smile Too Much” ending features a fully animated sequence of your character laughing uncontrollably as the town disappears around them.
  • The “Smile Rejected” path breaks the fourth wall and forces a game reboot, with all characters now wearing your face.
  • The “Courier Ending” transforms you into the new postmaster, and the game loops—only now, you choose who smiles and who doesn’t.

Pikabuu: Smile is a suffocating, dreamlike descent into the kind of horror that lives behind a cheerful mask. It’s about conformity, denial, and the fear of seeing everyone around you pretend everything is fine—even when it obviously isn’t.
